During 2008, humanity will cross a milestone – 50% of the world population will be urban – in contrast with its beginning as small groups and much later as small settlements.
Today development and urbanization are synonymous and the trends prove just that. In the twentieth century urbanization was driven by Europe & North America. During the 25 years from 1950 to 1975 and to a certain extent till 2000, the growth in urban population came also from Latin American region but the future growth will be driven by African and Asian regions, where urban population will more than double.(click on next button to see the past trend and future projections - area of circles is proportional to urban population of the respective region).
